Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRC) has recently published a revised alignment map for Mumbai Metro Line-11, which is planned to run along South Mumbai’s eastern seaboard. This update follows the Maharashtra Urban Development Department’s decision in January 2023 to transfer Line-11’s execution to MMRC, leading to a re-examination of its alignment to improve utility and increase ridership.

Originally envisioned as a 12.77 km line connecting Wadala to Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with 10 stations (2 elevated and 8 underground), the new alignment now includes a more central route south of Byculla. The revised route passes through areas such as Nagpada, Bhendi Bazaar, CSMT, Fort, and extends to SPM Chowk near the Gateway of India in Colaba’s Apollo Bandar. The line is now estimated to be approximately 16 km long, with 15 stations planned, including Anik Bus Depot, Wadala Depot, CGS Colony, Ganesh Nagar, BPT Hospital, Sewri, Hay Bunder, Coal Bunder, Reay Road, Byculla, Nagpada Junction, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, CSMT Metro (interchange with Line-3 / Aqua Line), Horniman Circle, and SPM Circle.

Line-11 will be Mumbai’s third underground line after Line-3 (Aqua Line) and Line-7A (Red Line). The construction cost for this line is now expected to be Rs. 16,000 crore, nearly double the original estimate of Rs. 8739 crore, as suggested by the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 2018. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has previously expressed interest in providing an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan for the line’s construction.

The train depot for Line-11 is planned to be built at Wadala, between Mumbai Monorail’s depot and Lodha New Cuffe Parade towers, where several casting yards are located. The line’s construction, however, is expected to start no sooner than 2027, with several steps still pending, including securing financing, preparing detailed designs, appointing a General Consultant, and conducting the civil tendering process.

Revised alignment of Mumbai Metro’s Line-11 as per tender notice

In June 2024, MMRC invited bids for an underground utility survey to assist in the planning of Line-11’s revised alignment. The survey will involve the use of Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) to map underground utilities such as pipelines, power cables, and telecommunications ducts. The survey results will include detailed maps, reports, and images, which will help in assessing the existing underground utilities along the proposed route.
