India's National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) and Afcons Infrastructure have signed a contract worth Rs. 6,397.27 crore for the construction of Package C-2 of the MAHSR project. This package includes a 20.377 km underground section, which will involve building a roughly 3 km "undersea" tunnel beneath Thane Creek.

Afcons Infrastructure has been assigned the task of completing this package within a 5.17-year deadline. They will utilize at least 3 Mega Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) with a diameter of approximately 14.5 meters to bore around 16 km of the tunnel. The remaining 5 km will be constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).

It's noteworthy that this development signifies the inclusion of an undersea tunnel in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, representing a significant engineering feat for India's transportation infrastructure.
