In a city known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and iconic landmarks, Kolkata has now added another feather to its cap with the construction of the River Metro Tunnel. This ambitious project, the first of its kind in India, has transformed the city's transportation infrastructure and revolutionized the way residents and visitors navigate the bustling streets. In this blog, we will delve into the fascinating world beneath the surface of the Hooghly River and explore the marvel that is the Kolkata Under River Metro Tunnel.
Kolkata, often referred to as the "City of Joy," has long struggled with traffic congestion and inadequate public transportation. Recognizing the need for a more efficient and sustainable mode of transport, the Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Limited (KMRCL) initiated the construction of the River Metro Tunnel.
The Under River Metro Tunnel, stretching approximately 16.6 kilometers, connects the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah, running beneath the majestic Hooghly River. It serves as an extension to the existing East-West Metro Line, providing seamless connectivity to commuters traveling between the two cities.
The construction of the River Metro Tunnel is a testament to human ingenuity and technological prowess. Overcoming numerous challenges, engineers designed and implemented innovative techniques to create this underground marvel.
The tunnel itself was constructed using a tunnel-boring machine (TBM), a colossal apparatus capable of excavating through varying soil conditions. As the TBM advanced, it installed precast concrete segments, forming the tunnel lining. This method ensured the stability and integrity of the tunnel, even in the face of the river's unpredictable conditions.
Safety was a paramount concern throughout the project. Special measures, such as water-tight seals, were incorporated to prevent any ingress of water into the tunnel. Additionally, an advanced monitoring system was implemented to constantly assess the structural integrity of the tunnel and ensure the safety of the passengers.
The Kolkata Under River Metro Tunnel has had a transformative impact on the city's transportation landscape. By connecting Kolkata and Howrah, it has significantly reduced travel time and congestion on the busy Howrah Bridge, one of the city's iconic landmarks.
Commuters can now travel seamlessly between the two cities, bypassing the perennial traffic snarls. This improved connectivity has opened up new opportunities for businesses, enhanced employment prospects, and eased the daily commute for thousands of people.
Furthermore, the underground metro system offers a comfortable and efficient mode.
